Child Welfare, a Priority Sector of Cambodia


The Royal Government of Cambodia always pays high attention to child welfare by considering it as a key priority sector, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

The Premier made the reaffirmation while he was presiding over the inauguration ceremony of a SOS Children’s Village in Prey Veng province this morning.

According to H.E. Vong Sauth, Minister of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, the inaugurated SOS Children’s Village is located on an area of 10,000 square metres in Sangkat Kampong Leav, Prey Veng provincial city. The construction, funded by Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, began on Dec. 5, 2018 and completed on Feb. 7, 2020 with a total cost of over US$1.5 million.

Currently, 27 children have been taken care by five mothers and 10 staff at the SOS Children’s Village Prey Veng, he pointed out.

Since 1999, he added, the SOS Children’s Village International have built 7 villages in Phnom Penh capital, and the provinces of Siem Reap, Battambang, Rattanakiri, Kratie, Kampot and Prey Veng. Another village is planned to be constructed in Thbong Khmum province in the near future.

As a member of the SOS Children’s Village International, the Royal Government of Cambodia via the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans and Youth Rehabilitation, contributes US$10,000 a year to carry out the SOS Children’s Village projects.
