Cambodian Prime Minister unveiled the country’s Malaria control achievement and encouraged collective effort to eliminate the disease by 2025.
Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen made the note in his public message to cheer the April 25 Malaria Day, themed ‘Jointly Take New-normal Action toward Reducing the Universal Malaria Disease Burden to Promote Health’.
He acknowledged the hard work of concerned stakeholders and extended his full support for all national actions against Malaria, especially in building awareness among the public residing in river, mountainous and forest areas.
According to the report from the national malaria control programme cited by the Prime Minister, Cambodia recorded some 170,000 cases of the disease in the 1980s and nearly 1,000 lives were lost to it.
The total cases dropped dramatically to 4,279 in 2021 or 54 percent, from 9,234 in 2020.
Noticeably, since 2018,Cambodia has no Malaria death – a move achieved before the target set for 2020.
Cambodia is currently implementing the National Strategic Plan for Malaria Control and Elimination 2021-2025 focusing on effective and quality disease control through collaboration with development partners.
It also aims to bring down Malaria cases to less than 5 per 1,000 population in 2023 and to completely eliminate the disease by 2025.
Samdech Techo Prime Minister called on concerned authorities at all levels as well as all stakeholders to join hands to achieve the set targets.
