Cambodia’s Progress in Promoting Rights of People with Disabilities Noted

The Secretary General of the Disability Action Council has noted remarkable progress by the Royal Government of Cambodia in promoting the rights of people with disabilities.

The secretary general, H.E. Em Chanmakara, who is also a secretary of state at the Ministry of Social Affairs, Veterans, and Youth Rehabilitation, made the point when chairing an opening session of a training on the right to access justice for people with disabilities on Oct. 31.

Cambodia has been transforming the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities into reality, which is a non-discriminatory society for the group, including women and children.

He also laid stress on the rights to mobility, freedom of expression, property ownership, financial access, civil registration, identification, and drivers’ licences that the government is focusing on.

He took the opportunity to call on the public as well as relevant players to further join hands to promote the rights of people with disabilities in order to keep them safe from exploitation, violence, and abuse.

Cambodia ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities on Dec. 20, 2012.
