The groundbreaking ceremony for the Kampong Cham Tourist Port took place this morning under the presidency of H.E. Peng Ponea, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism.
Kampong Cham Provincial Governor H.E. Un Chanda, Thbong Khmum Provincial Governor H.E. Pen Kosal, along with many senior officials and civil servants, also attended the event.
In his remarks, H.E. Peng Ponea underlined that the groundbreaking reflects the Royal Government’s continued efforts to promote the development of key physical infrastructure, particularly waterway transport facilities, which are vital for driving national economic growth.
Located in Village 3, Sangkat Veal Vong, Kampong Cham city, Kampong Cham province, the tourist port is expected to serve as a major hub for both domestic and international river transport. According to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the project will connect domestic tourist travel along the upper Mekong River to Kratie province and beyond, as well as facilitate international river travel from Vietnam to Phnom Penh, with onward connections to Kampong Cham, Kratie, and surrounding potential areas. It will also be linked with the Funan Techo Canal transport network.
This project is expected to contribute significantly to Cambodia’s economic and social development, while also enhancing the attractiveness of Kampong Cham city and improving the quality of life of its residents.
Construction of the port facilities under the first phase is planned to take 24 months. The second phase, which will include administrative buildings and a tourist waiting area, is scheduled to begin in 2026.
