The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) has rejected a distortion of remarks made by Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, regarding Cambodia’s border policy.
In a statement released Monday, the spokesperson for MFAIC said the comments, delivered during a meeting with displaced residents from Thmar Da in Veal Veng district, Pursat province on Mar. 27, were misrepresented by individuals with “malicious political agendas.”
The spokesperson dismissed claims circulating online that Cambodia was willing to concede territory in exchange for an end to incursions, calling such interpretations false and misleading.
According to the statement, H.E. Prak Sokhonn had reaffirmed the Royal Government’s consistent position of resolving border issues peacefully, based on international law, existing treaties, and established mechanisms.
The Ministry further stressed that Cambodia and Thailand share an internationally recognised border defined by maps produced by the Franco-Siamese Boundary Commission under the 1904 Convention and the 1907 Treaty.
It added that both sides are obliged to return any land found to be beyond agreed boundary lines during demarcation and verification processes, in accordance with legal principles and historical boundary arrangements.
Through the Joint Boundary Commission (JBC), established under the 2000 Memorandum of Understanding, Cambodia has worked with Thailand for over two decades to demarcate the border accurately and fairly on the ground.
Cambodia remains committed to peaceful, law-based solutions to border issues, while firmly rejecting any attempt to impose boundary changes through the use of force, the statement emphasised.
