From Tokyo to Phnom Penh: 18th Bon Odori Festival Celebrates Shared Traditions and Students Memories

Cambodian Minister of Labour and Vocational Training H.E. Heng Sour attended the 18th Bon Odori Festival in Phnom Penh on Sunday, highlighting the traditional Japanese event as a cultural bridge strengthening bilateral ties between Cambodia and Japan.

The annual cultural celebration was held at AEON Mall Meanchey and jointly organised for the first time by the Japanese Alumni of Cambodia (JAC) and the Japanese Association in Cambodia (JACAM).

The event brought together key figures, including Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Ishizuki Hideo, JACAM President Tetsuka Koji, representatives from the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), the Japanese Business Association of Cambodia (JBAC), and alumni members.

Speaking as a former president of JAC, H.E. Heng Sour expressed deep appreciation to the Japanese Embassy, business associations, and partner organisations for supporting the meaningful gathering, which he described as a testament to strong people-to-people ties – the foundation of the Cambodia-Japan strategic partnership.

“For myself and many Cambodians who studied in Japan, this festival is a meaningful opportunity to recall our student days,” H.E. Heng Sour said, noting that the gathering evoked fond memories of Japanese hospitality, cultural traditions, and warm support from the Japanese government, educators, and peers.

He expressed hope that the festival would serve as a piece of home for the Japanese diaspora living in Cambodia while providing Cambodians a firsthand experience of Japan’s iconic summer traditions.

For their parts, Ambassador H.E. Ishizuki and JACAM President Tetsuka warmly welcomed participants, voicing confidence that the event would further deepen the friendly relations and mutual understanding between the two nations.
