Cambodia and Germany have reaffirmed their high commitment to environmental protection, waste management, and climate change response, following high-level talks between Cambodian Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth and German Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Ms. Silke Röfer.
During the meeting held in Phnom Penh on Monday afternoon, Ambassador H.E. Röfer commended Cambodia’s progress in implementing the plastic reduction campaign, noting that it has evolved from a standard initiative into a nationwide social movement aimed at making environmental protection a daily habit among citizens.
The Cambodian Ministry of Environment outlined a clear strategic plan for waste management at landfills and highlighted efforts to promote investment in Waste-to-Energy technologies to minimise waste levels.
In addressing broader environmental challenges, Minister H.E. Eang Sophalleth discussed the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon and climate change. He emphasised the ministry’s readiness and emergency response plans, which include ensuring clean water supplies for communities in protected areas, maintaining water sources for wildlife, and implementing measures to prevent wildfires caused by global warming.
The Minister also underscored the importance of cultivating environmental awareness among youth and children through schools, encouraging them to value hygiene and nature, and participate in tree-planting activities to build a culture of environmental stewardship from a young age.
The two sides expressed optimism that continued cooperation between Cambodia and international partners will provide fresh momentum for advancing the national carbon neutrality policy and building a clean, green, and sustainable future for Cambodia.
