AOT Inspects Scene of Thai Military Attack on Cambodian Civilians

The ASEAN Observer Team (AOT) this morning conducted an on-site inspection visit to Prey Chan village, O’Beichoan commune, O’Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, to observe, verify, and report on the situation following the recent incident.

The update was shared by H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata, Spokeswoman for the Ministry of National Defence, adding the visit was facilitated by the Ministry’s Coordinating Task Force for the Observer Team.

She recalled that Thai forces had unprovokedly used violence against innocent Cambodian civilians in two separate incidents yesterday: the first at 3:50 p.m. and the second at 5:54 p.m., resulting in three people being injured and one person killed.

“Cambodia urges Thailand to immediately cease all hostile activities that threaten peace and stability in the region. At the same time, we call on the Thai side to firmly honour the Ceasefire Agreement, the Joint Declaration, and its obligations under international law with sincerity, good faith, and goodwill,” she underlined.

The Kingdom of Cambodia, she added, calls for an independent investigation into the incident and appeals for the participation of qualified international parties to uncover the truth and identify those responsible, in order to deliver justice for the victims of the Thai military’s shooting of innocent Cambodian civilians.

H.E. Lt. Gen. Maly Socheata also reaffirmed that Cambodia remains committed to resolving disputes through peaceful means in accordance with international law, existing treaties, conventions, and agreements –seeking solutions that are just, fair, lasting, and consistent with international legal principles.
