Five-Point Consensus Remains Significant in Solving Myanmar Crisis, Says Cambodian Top Diplomat


The Five-Point Consensus (5PC) remains the ASEAN’s main reference in assisting Myanmar’s return to normalcy through a Myanmar-led and Myanmar-owned political process.

The remarks were highlighted by H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, during the Extended Informal Consultation on the Implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (EIC), held in Cebu, the Philippines on Jan. 28, according to a press release issued this morning by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

The Cambodian Foreign Minister also emphasised the importance of ensuring that the 5PC remains relevant and effective, underscoring the need for a timely reassessment to identify practical ways forward. He further stressed that a credible and inclusive electoral process, with the support of the people of Myanmar, is an important pathway towards long-term stability.

The Meeting welcomed the appointment of H.E. Ms. Ma. Theresa P. Lazaro as the Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar for 2026 and reaffirmed its full support for her mandate, as well as for the Philippines’ efforts to advance the implementation of the 5PC in the follow-up to the ASEAN Leaders’ Review and Decision on the Implementation of the 5PC in 2025.

On the sidelines of the EIC, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister held bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers of ASEAN Member States on issues of common interest and concern.

With The Honourable Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof, Second Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brunei Darussalam, both Ministers highly valued the close friendship between the two countries over the past three decades, which have been continuously strengthened in various areas for the mutual benefits of the two peoples and nations. The Brunei Minister conveyed His Majesty the Sultan’s high appreciation for Samdech Techo’s letter of best wishes for His Majesty’s speedy recovery from his knee surgery.

With H.E. Le Hoai Trung, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam, the two Ministers underscored the great importance of the longstanding friendship of both countries, which was founded on the principles of “Good Neighbourliness, Traditional Friendship, Comprehensive Cooperation, and Long-lasting Stability”. The two Ministers recalled the fruitful outcome of the 21st Meeting of the Cambodia-Viet Nam Joint Commission on Economic, Cultural, Scientific, and Technological Cooperation held in Siem Reap on Dec. 8-9, 2025, and also discussed the preparation for the state visit of H.E. To Lâm, Secretary General of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, to Cambodia in early February 2026.

With H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister conveyed Cambodia’s deepest appreciation to Malaysia for its active role and discreet efforts in facilitating the ceasefire and the peaceful resolution on the situation between Cambodia and Thailand. The two Ministers reiterated their commitment to further deepening the long-standing and robust bilateral ties and to advancing wide-ranging areas of mutually beneficial cooperation. They look forward to the 3rd Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation between Cambodia and Malaysia later this year.

During the above bilateral meetings, the Ministers also exchanged views on regional and international issues of common interest and concern. Taking this opportunity, H.E. Deputy Prime Minister updated his counterparts on the latest developments regarding the situation along the border with Thailand.
