Their Majesties the King and Queen-Mother Donate US$1 Million for COVID-19 Vaccine Purchase

His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, and Her Majesty the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk have donated US$500,000 each to the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) to buy COVID-19 vaccines.

According to the National Television of Cambodia (TVK), the donation was made during a royal audience granted to H.E. Mam Bunheng, Minister of Health, at the Royal Palace this morning.

On Monday, Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen announced the government’s plan to purchase 1 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine for the first stage to provide for the high-risk and risk groups. But one million doses can be used only with 500,000 people (a person needs two doses) while the population of Cambodia is about 16 million, both children and adults, therefore around 10 million people need vaccines, he added.

Following the announcement, local tycoons, senior officials, civil servants and the general public donate their funds to support the Premier’s plan which has now collected more than US$30 million.

As of this morning, the national tally of COVID-19 rose to 356, of them, 307 have successfully recovered with no fatal case.
