DPM Sar Kheng Meets New UN Special Rapporteur


Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng has virtually received Professor Mr. Vitit Muntarbhorn, new UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Cambodia.

In the the meeting taking place via videoconference on Mar. 15, Professor Mr. Vitit Muntarbhorn raised five key points including labour conflicts, process of Commune/Sangkat Council Election in 2022, murdered and missing cases, Cambodia’s jail situation and refugees in Cambodia.

Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng has responded to all the concerned raised by his guest.

On labour conflicts including the one between NagaWorld and its former employees, the government always urged for negotiations for mutually acceptable solution, explained the deputy prime minister.

The Royal Government of Cambodia is working hard in implementing the decentralisation and de-concentration reforms and transparently prepares for the 5th Commune/Sangkat Council Election in June 2022 wherein 17 political parties will participate.

The murdered and missing cases have been investigated thoroughly by the judiciary body, he continued.

Cambodia has currently over 30,000 detainees, and the Ministry of Interior is addressing the overcrowded prisons particularly through the campaign on court case backlog settlement, building structure improvement, and detention exemption by court proceeding for minor offenses.

As a signatory of 1951 Refugee Convention, Cambodia has consistently fulfilled all obligations in cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) especially in supporting the refugees residing in Cambodia.

Mr. Vitit Muntarbhorn thanked Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng for his comprehensive response, and spoke highly of the constructive discussion and mutual understanding.
