Cambodia’s request for the inscription of “Koh Ker Temple” on the UNESCO World Heritage List will be responded by this year.
The update was shared by H.E. Ms. Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts following the 7th Plenary Session of the International Coordinating Committee for the Safeguarding and Development of Historic Site of Preah Vihear (ICC-Preah Vihear) in Siem Reap province on Mar. 22.
Cambodia successfully submitted the nomination dossier of Koh Ker for potential inscription on the World Heritage list in January 2021.
Encompassing 8,700 hectares of land surface, Koh Ker Temple is located at Srayong commune, Kulen district of Preah Vihear province.
Koh Ker, the archaeological site of ancient Lingapura or Chok Gargyar, is one of the most significant cultural heritage sites in Cambodia with 169 archaeological remains and 76 temples and remains a place of worship for the locals.
Home to a rich collection of diverse cultural heritage and dynamic creativity, Cambodia has three World Heritage Sites (Angkor, Preah Vihear, and Sambor Prei Kuk), and five Intangible Cultural Heritage elements (Royal Ballet of Cambodia, Sbek Thom, Tugging rituals and games, Chapei Dang Veng, and Lkhon Khol of Wat Svay Andet) inscribed on the UNESCO lists to date.
