Cambodia, UK to Tighten Bilateral Trade Cooperation

Cambodia and the United Kingdom have been committed to strengthening their bilateral cooperation to further boost the economic and trade development.

The commitment was made during a meeting here yesterday afternoon between H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, and visiting H.E. Jon Lambe, UK Ambassador to ASEAN, and H.E. Ms. Tina Redshaw, British Ambassador to Cambodia.

H.E. Pan Sorasak thanked the British government for the generalised system of preferences granted to the least developed countries, including Cambodia, and for COVID-19 vaccines to combat the pandemic in Cambodia, leading to the resumption of all economic activities.

The New Normal, together with recent major achievements of the Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC) and the ministry will become a new catalyst to increase the bilateral trade, underlined the minister, adding that both sides will continue to expand their cooperation for more trade, business and investment opportunities and potential in the future.

Regarding Cambodia’s chairmanship of ASEAN, H.E. Pan Sorasak also mentioned about the full support of ASEAN Economic Ministers for the country’s priority economic deliverables (PEDs) under the ASEAN Economic Community pillar, stressing that Cambodia welcomes the support of the UK, a main dialogue partner of ASEAN, in carrying out the PEDs successfully, especially in areas of digital trade, women entrepreneurship, micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), sustainable agriculture, tourism, hospitality and other service-related sectors.

For his part, H.E. Jon Lambe appreciated the progress and efforts of the RGC through the Ministry of Commerce to boost bilateral trade exchange as well as the role of Cambodia as the ASEAN Chair this year. He also reaffirmed the UK’s support and close cooperation with Cambodia to achieve the PEDs and build an inclusive, sustainable and robust ASEAN Community.

H.E. Jon Lambe is on a two-day visit in Cambodia to build stronger ties. According to a press release of the UK Government, during his stay here, apart from H.E. Minister of Commerce, the UK Ambassador to ASEAN will be meeting several Secretaries of State from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and ASEAN SEOM leader.
