Thbong Khmum to Become First Mine-Free Province Under PM Mine Action Project

Thboung Khmum province will be Cambodia’s first mine-free province through Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s Project for Mine Action (STP-MA) themed “Providing Safe Ground, Creating smiles”.

Senior Minister H.E. Ly Thuch, First Vice President of the Cambodian Mine Action and Victim Assistance Authority (CMAA) shared the news when addressing the opening of a demining centre in the province on July 15.

Civil war in the 1970s has left Thbong Khmum as the province most affected by landmines and explosive remnants of war, he said.

CMAA therefore, he continued, identified Thbong Khmum as a priority province to implement Samdech Techo’s mine action project.

H.E. Ly Thuch was confident that with the demining centre, the Cambodia National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces, Mines and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC) will clear all landmines and explosive remnants of war from the province within the next 6 months.

As planned the declaration of mine-free Thbong Khmum then will be presided over by Lieutenant General Hun Manet, deputy commander of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces.

The Senior Minister spoke highly of NPMEC for bringing honour to Cambodia through their mission overseas and for contributing to the security, happiness and harmony of the country and its people.

Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen recently launched a national movement to mobilise resources from donors across Cambodia and beyond to achieve mine-free Cambodia in 2025.
