Cambodia and Bangladesh have agreed to have a bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) to boost their connectivity through trade and businesses.
The agreement was made by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia and his Bangladeshi counterpart H.E. Ms. Sheikh Hasina, in New York on Sept. 22 (time in New York), on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.
Samdech Techo Hun Sen said both countries can start their negotiations for the FTA, and Cambodia is looking for more partners so as to increase trade and businesses between the two nations.
For her part, H.E. Ms. Sheikh Hasina pledged to do her best to reach the bilateral FTA to create more opportunities to promote Cambodia-Bangladesh trade exchange.
On the export of Cambodian rice to Bangladesh, Samdech Techo Prime Minister encouraged direct investment from Bangladesh in rice production for export in Cambodia, which currently has over 6.7 million tonnes of paddy surplus and some 4.2 million tonnes of rice surplus.
The direct investment from Bangladesh will ensure the stability of rice export from Cambodia to the country, underlined the Cambodian Premier.
Both sides have so far negotiated on the export of 200,000 tonnes of Cambodian rice to Bangladesh.
