Cambodia, UN Highlight Good Cooperation


Cambodia and the United Nations have shown their satisfaction with their good cooperation in various areas, particularly in Khmer Rouge trials and peacekeeping operations.

In a meeting with UN Secretary-General H.E. Antonio Guterres in New York on Sept. 22 (time in New York), on the sidelines of the 77th Session of the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen underlined the success of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal, a cooperation between Cambodia and the UN, according to H.E. Kao Kim Hourn, Minister Attached to the Prime Minister.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said today (Sept. 22), the Supreme Court Chamber of the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) pronounced the appeal judgement upholding the pronouncement by the Trial Chamber (the sentence of life imprisonment) in Case 002/02 against Khieu Samphan, former Khmer Rouge head of state. This judgement completed long-lasting Khmer Rouge Trials, which contribute to delivering justice to the people and prevent the reoccurrence of such regime.

Regarding Cambodia’s participation in peacekeeping missions under the UN umbrella, Samdech Techo Prime Minister reaffirmed Cambodia’s readiness to send more peacekeepers. He also spoke highly of the UN’s active role in maintaining peace in the world, including Cambodia.

Since 2006, Cambodia has deployed 8,302 forces (580 are women) to carry out UN peacekeeping missions in nine countries – Chad, Sudan, South Sudan, Central African Republic, Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria, Mali, and Yemen.

Besides, the Cambodian Premier took the opportunity to invite the UN secretary-general to attend the ASEAN-UN Summit to be hosted by Cambodia in Phnom Penh in coming November.

In reply, H.E. Antonio Guterres congratulated the success of the Khmer Rouge Tribunal and lauded Cambodia’s contribution to the world peace.

For the ASEAN-UN Summit, the UN secretary-general said he will consider to attend this important meeting to boost the cooperation between the two bodies.
