Cambodian, EU Leaders Discuss Cooperation


Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and visiting H.E. Charles Michel, President of the European Council held a discussion on Cambodia-EU relations and cooperation in a bilateral meeting on Nov. 12, on the sidelines of the ASEAN Summits and Related Summits.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister recalled their bilateral meeting in Tokyo in last September and underlined that the participation of the President of EU Council in the ASEAN Summits and Related Summits in Phnom Penh proves the solidity of ASEAN-EU relations while the two Organisations are commemorating the 45th Anniversary of the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister thanked the EU for its continued cooperation and assistance to Cambodia since 1992, contributing to the socio-economic development, infrastructure, education and health, especially for providing COVID-19 vaccines through COVAX facility.

Samdech Techo Prime Minister and the President of EU Council also discussed ASEAN-EU cooperation and looked forward to the ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit to mark the 45th Anniversary of the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations to be held in December 2022 in Brussels and co-chaired by Samdech Techo Prime Minister Hun Sen and the President of the European Council.

Both Leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues, during which Samdech Techo Prime Minister stressed Cambodia’s position against threat to use nuclear weapons and underscored Cambodia’s humanitarian activities by sharing the experiences of clearing landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) under the auspices of the United Nations in some countries around the world. Samdech Techo Prime Minister also informed the President of the European Council of the decision of Cambodia in collaboration with the Government of Japan to dispatch Cambodian deminers to help train Ukraine’s deminers in Poland.

The President of EU Council highly appreciated Cambodia’s persistent efforts in advancing the implementation of the 5PC on Myanmar and the initiative of Cambodia and Japan to help demining in Ukraine.
