Information Paper on Informal Consultation on Situation in Myanmar

Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation this evening shared an Information Paper on the Informal Consultation on the situation in Myanmar held in Bangkok, Thailand on Dec. 22, released by the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The full document reads as follows:

“Information Paper
On the Informal Consultation on 22 December 2022

On 22 December 2022, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Thailand hosted a ministerial Informal Consultation on the situation in Myanmar on the sidelines of a Thai-Myanmar bilateral talks in Bangkok.

The consultation was a non-ASEAN meeting but intended to complement ASEAN’s ongoing collective efforts to find a peaceful political resolution for the situation in Myanmar.

In attendance were Foreign Ministers of neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia, namely Cambodia, Lao PDR and Myanmar, and the Deputy Foreign Minister of Vietnam. Also present from Myanmar were the Ministers responsible for international cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

The consultation was the first time in more than one year that Foreign Ministers had a face-to-face discussion with the sole purpose of providing a diplomatic space for candid and constructive discussions and pragmatic engagement, particularly for neighbouring countries most affected by the situation.

The open-ended informal consultation was meaningful with Ministers engaging in free-flow and proactive discussions. This included the opportunity to hear from Myanmar and to exchange views on finding the exit strategy and pathways towards a return to normalcy in Myanmar-with special focus on facilitating the provision of humanitarian assistance as well as exploring other approaches that could support the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus.

Thailand appreciates the role of Cambodia, as ASEAN Chair, as well as DPM/FM Prak Sokhonn, as Special Envoy of the ASEAN Chair on Myanmar, in trying to work out a practical solution for Myanmar. Thailand will continue to render full support to Indonesia, as the incoming ASEAN Chair, in continuing to move forward the progress made under Cambodia.
