UN Committed to Continuing Cooperation with Cambodia


The United Nations is committed to continuing cooperation with Cambodia in all sectors, especially in planning.

The commitment was made by Mr. Joseph Scheuer, newly appointed Resident Coordinator of the United Nations in Cambodia during a meeting with H.E. Dr. Chhay Than, Senior Minister and Minister of Planning here in Phnom Penh on Feb.14.

H.E. Dr. Chhay Than informed Mr. Joseph Scheuer of the ministry’s effort to meet the Sustainable Development Goals 2016-2030 and Cambodia’s vision to become a developed country by 2050.

The ministry has recently conducted major censuses including the general population and economic censuses, he said

In 2023, there will also be an agriculture census with annual socio-economic survey and other surveys to secure sufficient data sources for national development strategic plan 2024-2028.

Cambodia completed the UNDP’s criteria for its readiness to leave the Least Development Countries (LDCs) in 2021 and in 2024 Cambodia did the assessment again, continued the minister.

Mr. Joseph Scheuer pledged to assist the Ministry of Planning in strengthening quality of data and statistics, preparation of voluntary national assessment report 2023 and to support Cambodia’s readiness to leave the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in 2024.

H.E. Dr. Chhay Than thanked the UN for its support to Cambodia, especially to the Ministry of Planning both financially and technically.
