PM: Workers’ Monthly Minimum Wage in Cambodia Higher than in Some Countries

Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen this morning affirmed that the minimum monthly wage of garment workers in Cambodia is higher than that in some other countries in the region and Asia, such as Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

At a get-together with nearly 20,000 factory workers and employees at the Royal Group Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone in Khan Kambol this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen pointed out that the current minimum wage of garment workers in Cambodia is US$200 per month without counting other benefits.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that the monthly minimum wages of workers in some countries may be lower due to exchange rate fluctuations. That is why, he underlined, Cambodia allows factory owners to give monthly wages to give their workers in Riel, the national currency, or in U.S. dollar.

Besides, the Prime Minister stressed that while the armed forces and civil servants did not have an increase in their salaries in 2021 and 2022, the garment workers did although not much.

In the 1990s, Cambodia had only 64 factories, employing a total of 80,000 workers with US$40 as monthly wage, but now there are 1,326 garment and textile factories in the country with some 840,000 workers.

If we add up other types of factories, Cambodia has in total 17,000 factories and enterprises with 1.5 million workers.
