Anyone who Violates New Amendment to Election Law will Face up to KHR 20 Million Fine, Says PM

Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen has shared some important points that will be added into the proposed election law amendment.

Addressing to a get-together with some 18,000 factory workers in Phnom Penh’s Khan Pursenchey this morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said if the draft amendment to the election law is adopted, anyone who violates it will be fined from KHR 5 to 20 million (over US$1,200 to nearly US$5,000).

“The proposed new Article 142 of the election law will stipulate a fine from KHR 5 to 20 million, not including other criminal charges, for those who obstruct or incite eligible voters not to go to the polls or register to vote …,” he underlined.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen explained details about this new article as the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice have been working together so that it will be ready before the election campaign to take place early next month.

This decision was taken in order to tighten the election rights by strengthening and enhancing the responsibility of political leaders at both the national and sub-national levels, he added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also repeated that if anyone fails to go to vote on July 23, 2023 without a valid legal reason, s/he will not be able to stand for election, neither for the commune/Sangkat council election in 2027, the provincial/capital, municipal, district/Khan council election in 2024 nor the senate election in 2024 and the parliamentary elections in 2028.
