Draft Law on Amendments to Election Law Already Submitted to National Assembly

The draft law on amendments to the Election Law has been submitted to the National Assembly, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen at a get-together with almost 20,000 factory workers in Choeung Prey district, Kampong Cham province this morning.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said this draft law, prepared by the Ministry of Interior and Ministry of Justice, had been completed.

“It was submitted to the National Assembly yesterday (June 15),” he underlined.

The draft law on amendments to the election law is designed to ensure that the elections are conducted without interruption by anyone, he added.

According to his explanation, if this draft law comes in force, anyone who violates it will be fined from KHR 5 to 20 million (over US$1,200 to nearly US$5,000), not including other criminal charges.

This decision was taken in order to tighten the election rights by strengthening and enhancing the responsibility of political leaders at both the national and sub-national levels, he added.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen also repeated that if anyone fails to go to vote on July 23, 2023 without a valid legal reason, s/he will not be able to stand for election, neither for the commune/Sangkat council election in 2027, the provincial/capital, municipal, district/Khan council election in 2024 nor the senate election in 2024 and the parliamentary elections in 2028.
