The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has signed the Instrument of Accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), making the country the 51st High Contracting Party to the TAC, said a press release of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) made public this morning.
The document was signed by His Royal Highness Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in Jakarta, Indonesia on July 12 during the 56th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, under the witness of the ASEAN foreign ministers, including H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MFAIC, it pointed out.
Saudi Arabia’s accession to the TAC affirmed its commitment to ASEAN values and principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation in Southeast Asia, the source underlined.
In 2022, under Cambodia’s chairmanship of ASEAN, seven nations – Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Greece, the Netherlands, and Denmark – signed the Instrument of Accession to TAC.
TAC was established in 1976 and embodies universal principles of peaceful coexistence and friendly cooperation among States in Southeast Asia. It is a legally-binding code for inter-state relations in the region and beyond. The Treaty has been amended three times, in 1987, 1998, and 2010, respectively, to allow for accession by states outside Southeast Asia as well as for regional organisations whose members are sovereign states, among others.
