His Majesty Preah Bat Samdech Preah Boromneath Norodom Sihamoni, King of Cambodia, called on here this morning the members of the 5th Legislature of the Senate to fulfill their duties more efficiently, more effectively and more accountably for the best interests of the nation.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 5th Legislature of the Senate held at the Senate Palace, His Majesty the King expressed his warm congratulations to the members of the 5th Legislature of the Senate to jointly discharge their duties in this Supreme Legislature in order to be more efficient, more effective and more accountable within the framework of good governance and the rule of law.
“The Senate must contribute to the improvement and balance of state power for the purpose of safeguarding peace, independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, political stability, as well as protecting the Constitution and the monarchy. Strong national unity and the protection of all the noble achievements of the national society for stability must go hand in hand with the promotion of national honour and prestige in the regional and global framework,” he underlined.
All Senators have to work hard, to adhere to the rules and ethics of the Senate, to respect the Constitution, laws and internal regulations, and to demonstrate a great sense of responsibility in carrying out their duties, in order to bring confidence and warmth to our fellow citizens, he added.
His Majesty the King also lauded the achievements of the Senate during the past four legislative terms.
The Senate of Cambodia has operated effectively, demonstrating political maturity and fulfilled its responsibilities under the wise leadership of Samdech Akka Moha Thomma Pothisal Chea Sim, and continued to be led by Samdech Vibol Sena Pheakdei Say Chhum, said the monarch in his royal message, adding that with its achievements and progress in implementing the three core functions, the Senate has obtained positive results in the best interest of the nation and its people, notably by strengthening political stability and national unity, promoting respect for the rule of law and encouraging the implementation of reform policies.
In particular, decentralisation and deconcentration reforms are the bridges linking state power to the lower base level, so that democracy can be deepened from the national to the communal level, he continued.
In its international cooperation function, the Senate participates in bilateral and multilateral cooperation, performing an honorable and potential role in the regional and global framework.
In the context of far-reaching state reform and national development in all fields, the proper preparation of national laws in accordance with the Constitution of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and respect for the law by preserving culture, traditions, customs and national ethics, and protecting the environment and the sustainability of natural resources, is a key factor in maintaining national and economic stability, stressed His Majesty the King.
