Timor-Leste Thanks ASEAN, Especially Samdech Techo Hun Sen, for Support Toward Full Membership


Timor-Leste is set to attain full membership in ASEAN at the upcoming 47th ASEAN Summit, scheduled for October 2025 in Kuala Lumpur, according to an announcement by Malaysian Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim at the 46th ASEAN Summit, held on May 26 in Kuala Lumpur.

“This marks a historic moment not only for Timor-Leste, but for the entire ASEAN family. The journey of Timor-Leste toward full membership reflects our collective vision for a united, cohesive, and forward-looking ASEAN,” the Malaysian Premier stated.

In a message shared on his social media account, H.E. José Ramos-Horta, President of Timor-Leste, expressed his deep appreciation to all ASEAN leaders and officials, past and present, for their contributions to this significant milestone.

Also on May 26, during an unofficial meeting in Kuala Lumpur with a Cambodian parliamentary delegation led by H.E. Dr. Cheam Yeap, First Vice President of the National Assembly, a Timor-Leste parliamentary delegation expressed their delight at the upcoming full membership. They extended heartfelt thanks to Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, former Prime Minister and current President of the Senate of Cambodia, for his unwavering support throughout Timor-Leste’s bid for ASEAN membership.
