Cambodia Holds Historic National Assembly-Senate Congress

The two-day joint Congress between the National Assembly (NA) and the Senate kicked off this morning at the NA Palace in Phnom Penh under the chairmanship of Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

NA President Samdech Maha Rathsapheathika Thipadei Khuon Sudary and Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet were also present at the event, along with the participation of senators, lawmakers, members of the Supreme Consultation and Recommendation Council, and representatives of political parties at the NA.

Social protection systems, the informal economy, and agriculture are the key topics for this joint congress—an unprecedented event in the country’s legislative history.

The primary objective of the congress is to serve as a platform for raising awareness of the Royal Government of Cambodia’s achievements while fostering in-depth discussions on the key topics identified.

The platform, organised at the request of Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, demonstrates the democratic process and the highest responsibility of the government to Cambodian people, who overwhelmingly elected the 7th legislature on July 23, 2023.

According to Cambodian law, a congress by the NA and Senate is convened when necessary or to resolve national issues, including those related to independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
