Friendly nations—including Japan, France, Australia, and the United Kingdom, etc.—as well as the European Union have issued official statements welcoming the immediate and unconditional ceasefire agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand. They have also called for the effective and sustained implementation of the agreement.
In a statement released on July 29, Japanese Foreign Minister H.E. Iwaya Takeshi highlighted the importance of maintaining a sound bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Thailand, calling it “extremely important for peace and stability in the region.” He noted Japan’s active role in encouraging both countries to de-escalate the situation.
H.E. Iwaya Takeshi also praised the diplomatic efforts of all parties involved in achieving this agreement, including Malaysia as the host of the special meeting and the United States as the co-organiser.
“The Government of Japan will continue to encourage both Cambodia and Thailand to promote steady implementation of the ceasefire agreement and de-escalation of the situation, in coordination with relevant countries,” he underlined.
France also welcomed the ceasefire and the resumption of dialogue following the Prime Ministers’ meeting in Malaysia on July 28. It emphasised the need for strict implementation of the agreement and expressed support for ASEAN’s central role in managing regional conflicts.
While commending Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his mediation efforts under Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship, France reiterated its commitment to a peaceful resolution of disputes through international law and expressed its willingness to contribute to international and ASEAN-led efforts.
“This significant progress must serve as a starting point for a lasting settlement through peaceful means, in accordance with international law,” read a statement from the French Embassy in Phnom Penh.
Australian Foreign Minister Senator the Hon Penny Wong spoke highly of the ceasefire and urged both countries to honour the ceasefire agreement and work towards a lasting and peaceful resolution.
“We appreciate PM Anwar and Malaysia’s leadership as ASEAN Chair, and the role played by President Trump,” she added.
UK Minister for the Indo-Pacific, Catherine West MP, echoed similar sentiments, calling the ceasefire “a crucial step towards peace.” She urged all parties to honor and uphold it.
High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Ms. Kaja Kallas, called the ceasefire a “major breakthrough” following days of deadly clashes. “It’s vital both countries implement it in good faith. I thank Malaysia as ASEAN chair for helping facilitate the negotiation process,” she stated.
