Government Spokesperson Highlights Positive Outcomes of Full Month of Ceasefire Implementation

During the first full month of implementing the ceasefire reached in Putrajaya, Malaysia (July 28–August 28), many efforts have been made by Cambodia, Thailand, and other relevant parties, resulting in continuous positive outcomes that have so far prevented renewed armed clashes, said H.E. Pen Bona, Head of the Royal Government Spokesperson Unit, at a press briefing this morning.

He recalled the Extraordinary Meeting of Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on Aug. 7 in Kuala Lumpur which resulted in the 13-point Agreed Minutes under the observation of representatives from the United States of America, the People’s Republic of China, and Malaysia. This followed by four meetings of Regional Border Committee (RGC) between military regions of both countries, which reached several agreements demonstrating both sides’ commitment to maintaining communication and resolving problems in order to de-escalate tensions and avoid renewed armed clashes.

In addition, both sides have respectively organised multiple diplomatic visits as well as field inspection visits coordinated by the Interim Observer Team (IOT) composed of foreign military attachés based in each country to the border area affected by the armed clashes, the government spokesperson added.

Furthermore, he continued, top leaders of Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia have maintained constant communication to discuss and resolve issues aiming to ease tensions and uphold the ceasefire sustainably.

At the same time, unity among the Cambodians remain strong, both at home and abroad, standing together to safeguard peace and demanding the release of the 18 Cambodian military personnel who were unlawfully detained by Thai forces since the early morning of July 29, as well as protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity with dignity, non-violence, and great patience, worthy of a people with high moral and cultural values, H.E. Pen Bona stressed.
