Thai forces fired a total of 17 shells of 155mm artillery into densely populated civilian residential areas in Poipet city, Banteay Meanchey province, this morning.
The shelling occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 9:03 a.m., according to a report from the Ministry of National Defence. Ten shells landed in the Stung Bot Roundabout area on Street 58, Sangkat Phsar Kandal; five shells in Andong Thmar Meas village, Sangkat Nimitt; and two shells in Toul Pongro village, Sangkat O’Russey.
The attacks inflicted injuries on innocent civilians travelling on Street 58 and caused damage to private property as well, the report added.
“The aforementioned actions constitute indiscriminate attacks by the Thai military and represent a serious violation of international humanitarian law,” it underlined.
The Ministry of National Defence stated that Cambodian forces assisted the injured civilians and continue to monitor the situation closely, standing strong, brave, and vigilant in their duty to protect the territorial integrity of Cambodia. “We will defend our national dignity with courage and unwavering resolve, at any cost, without succumbing to coercion or intimidation in any form,” the Ministry reaffirmed.
