Prime Minister Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet has called for greater attention to tree planting, road maintenance and beautification along major roads and national roads across Cambodia to enhance both road safety and the country’s landscape.
Speaking at the inauguration of National Road No. 10 in Veal Veng district, Pursat province this morning, Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet said the Royal Government has been making efforts to improve the appearance and safety of major roads by planting trees for green and installing solar-powered street lights.
According to the Prime Minister, solar street lights will be installed on some 1,200 kilometres of the national roads, up from the initial target of 1,000 kilometres.
The programme has been implemented with a budget of around US$6 million, he said.
The solar lighting project covers 13 provinces and capital, including Phnom Penh, Kandal, Kampong Chhnang, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, Siem Reap, Kampong Cham, Kampong Speu, Takeo, Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot and Kep.
Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet also called for the expansion of similar initiatives along major roads and national roads, stressing the importance of maintaining clean and attractive surroundings while improving road users’ safety.
The Premier underlined that road infrastructure development should not focus solely on transport and connectivity, but should also take into account road-side landscaping, environmental improvement and public safety.
Samdech Thipadei encouraged relevant authorities to continue planting and properly maintaining trees and improving the overall appearance of roads, making Cambodia’s major transport corridors safer, greener and more attractive.
