Japanese FM Reaffirms Strong Relations with Cambodia

Before heading for the 55th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (55th AMM) and Related Meetings in Phnom Penh, Japanese Minister for Foreign Affairs H.E. Hayashi Yoshimasa has reaffirmed the strong relations between Japan and Cambodia.

H.E. Hayashi Yoshimasa will visit Cambodia tomorrow to attend the ASEAN-related meetings.

“During this visit, I intend to reaffirm the strong relationship between Cambodia and Japan,” he said in his message to the Cambodian people.

Last March, Japanese Prime Minister H.E. Kishida Fumio visited Cambodia and the two Prime Ministers issued a joint statement outlining the direction of future cooperation, he recalled, stressing that Japan will continue to work hard to implement the Joint Statement on practical cooperation with the Cambodian people.

“During this visit, I will meet with H.E. Prak Sokhonn, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation to talk in particular on the progress of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port Development Project, Cambodia’s core port, and security cooperation,” he underlined.

H.E. Hayashi Yoshimasa said he will attend foreign ministers’ meetings under the ASEAN framework as the international community is facing complex issues such as Ukraine, North Korea, Myanmar and the South China Sea. Meetings held in such situations are important as a forum to emphasise and disseminate values and principles that the international community should adhere to, he added.

H.E. Hayashi Yoshimasa continued that he also wanted to taste Cambodia’s cuisine. “I am a fan of Khmer food, I often go to Khmer restaurants in Tokyo. Now I look forward to tasting the original taste of Khmer food like Amok,” the Japanese top diplomat said.
