Cambodia to Rebuild “Roup Pi” Statue Symbolising Cambodia-France Solidarity

The Royal Government of Cambodia will rebuild “Roup Pi” statue, known in French as Monument aux Morts, a symbol of solidarity between Cambodia and France, and replace it in front of the Embassy of France in Phnom Penh.

The plan was underlined by Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia at a joint press conference with H.E. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic, at the Elysée Palace in Paris, France on Dec.13.

The statue, which dates back to 1925, has been destroyed by the Khmer Rouge in 1977, he said, adding that the reconstruction was made at the request of Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction H.E. Chea Sophara.

“Roup Pi” statue features two soldiers – a Cambodian and a French. It was destroyed with the idea that it symbolises slavery.

Regarding the bilateral ties, the Cambodian Premier expressed his pride of the growing relations and cooperation between the two countries and thanked France for its support for Cambodia’s peace-seeking process and reconstruction.

Cambodia and France will mark next year the 70th anniversary of the establishment of their diplomatic ties.
