Cambodia’s Consumer Protection Regime in Remarkable Progress

Although Cambodia has the youngest consumer protection regime in ASEAN region, it is noticeably developing since the enactment of the Law on Consumer Protection in 2019.

The remark was made by H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce, while presiding over the opening of National Consumer Conference 2023 themed Empowering Consumers to Boost Fair Marketplace, at Sofitel Phnom Penh Phokeethra on April 4.

As part of the work, the Royal Government of Cambodia has adopted many legal documents such as the guideline on the establishment of Cambodian consumer association, and the launch of National Programme on Consumer Protection, he said.

The National Consumer Conference 2023 was held in conjunction with a recent World Consumer Rights Day (on Mar. 15), reaffirming Cambodia’s commitment to consumer protection.

In the ASEAN region, consumer protection had been considered a priority, and set in ASEAN Strategic Action Plan for Consumer Protection (ASAPCP) for 2016-2025, H.E. Minister underlined.

More than 400 concerned officials attended hybrid online and in-person conference organised by the Directorate-General of Consumer Protection, Competition and Fraud Repression (CCF) with the support from GIZ.
