Cambodia and South Korea have kick-started a regional cooperation project to reduce methane emissions, especially from the agro-industrial sector, which is a backbone of Cambodia’s growth.
Minister of Environment H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth presided over the launch of the ASEAN–South Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation Project at the ministry on May 6.
According to H.E. Minister, while Cambodia is promoting and diversifying the agriculture industry, including rice and livestock production, to back its socio-economic aspirations, the country saw a significant increase in methane emissions—a greenhouse gas very harmful to human health and the environment.
The regional cooperation project implementation is very timely and will provide practical solutions for Cambodia to address the emerging health and environmental threat as well as to grease the country’s target to become a carbon-neutral country by 2050, he added.
Thanking the South Korean government, H.E. Dr. Eang Sophalleth highlighted that the project will support the sharing of new knowledge and innovation and technical capacity building to primary stakeholders.
The initiative promotes smart and climate-resilient practices in minimising methane emissions, building community resilience, and boosting productivity.
