Senate President Supports Government’s Closure of Daung International Border Gate

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate and President of the ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP), this afternoon expressed his full support for the Royal Government’s decision to close the Daung International Border Gate between Cambodia and Thailand, located in Battambang province.

“Thailand sends hundreds of truckloads of fruit to Vietnam daily (through Cambodia), but today the border is jammed after Cambodia closed it,” he wrote in a social media post. “To Thai farmers who are harvesting their crops, please go protest to your own military. Cambodia will reopen this border gate only when all border checkpoints unilaterally closed by the Thai military are restored to their previous status.”

Samdech Techo Hun Sen emphasised that Cambodia had long been aware of these issues but had refrained from acting in order to avoid disrupting economic activities. “But now it’s time for us to respond, focusing on three small measures only: first, halt the purchase of internet services from Thailand; second, suspend the screening of Thai films in Cambodia; and third, close the Daung border gate — which directly impacts Thai fruit farmers,” he said.

“This is Cambodia’s response in less than 12 hours,” underlined Samdech Techo Hun Sen, who previously served as Prime Minister of Cambodia.
