Cambodia-Japan Friendship Bridge – locally known as Chroy Changvar Bridge I – in Phnom Penh was re-opened for official use this morning, after about one year and a half of rehabilitation.
Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen and Japanese Ambassador to Cambodia H.E. Hidehisa Horinouchi presided over the event.
The bridge will resume its crucial contribution to reducing traffic congestion, especially during the in-coming Khmer Traditional New Year in mid-April.
The rehabilitation of the bridge financed by Japan costs about US$30 million and was calculated to ensure the lifespan of the bridge for at least in 50 years.
Originally built in 1963 using Japan’s technology, Chroy Changvar Bridge was damaged in 1970s, and rebuilt in 1996.
The 709-metre bridge is playing a vital role in connecting Phnom Penh to other provinces of Cambodia.
