Cambodian PM Calls for Attention to UXO in Mekong River


Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, has appealed to the Mekong River Commission (MRC) to pay attention to the unexploded ordnance (UXO) under water in the Mekong River.

The Cambodian Premier raised the issued during the Retreat Session of the Fourth MRC Summit in Vientiane, Laos this morning, H.E. Sok Chenda Sophea, Minister Delegate Attached to the Prime Minister, Secretary General of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), told reporters at a press conference at Phnom Penh International Airport this afternoon upon the return of a high-level Cambodian delegation led by Samdech Techo Hun Sen from Laos.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen said there are a lot of UXO in the Mekong River Basin, which needs more attention in order to avoid danger to the citizens.

“We must explore and destroy all those UXO for the safety of our development,” he underlined.

The Prime Minister hoped that the concerns of the Mekong countries related to UXO in the river basin should gain attention from the development partners as well.
