Cambodian Premier Inaugurates Lower Sasan 2 Hydropower Plant in Stung Treng Province


Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower Plant in the northeastern province of Stung Treng was inaugurated this morning under the presidency of Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.

On the occasion, the Premier highlighted the key success of energy sector in the country and spoke highly of Lower Sesan 2 hydropower project, saying that it will generate jobs to Cambodian people and state income. It will also increase the country’s level of energy independence and security, thus contributing to the economic development and poverty reduction.

Invested by a joint venture between China’s Huaneng Hydrolancang International Energy holding 51 percent of the stake, Cambodia’s Royal Group owning 39 percent and Vietnamese EVN International Joint Stock Company possessing 10 percent, the project was developed in a BOT (Build-Operate-Transfer) form for a 45-year period – five year for construction and 40 years for business.

With a total investment capital of some US$781.52 million, it is the biggest hydropower project in the country. It has started its first phase operations in November last year after almost four years of construction.
